Southwestern Backyard Burgers

  • 2 lb. ground beef
  • 1/2 lb. bulk sausage
  • 1-4 oz. can chopped green chilies or fresh chopped peppers
  • 1/4 c. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. hickory liquid smoke, optional
  • 1/2 c. crushed crackers
  • 4 1/2 tsp. chili powder
  • 3 tsp. ground cumin
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. pepper
  • 8 slices Pepper Jack cheese
  • 8 hamburger buns, split
  • additional toppings, as desired


Put meat in bowl. Mix next 8 ingredients and gently mix into meat. Make 8 patties. Grill, covered, for 5-7 minutes on each side or until done through. Top with cheese, and grill 1 minute longer or until cheese is melted. Serve on buns that have been toasted until warm. Serves 8 people. Note: You can make the burgers the size you want and one batch might make more or less than 8 burgers..
